Walkability: Why It Matters So Much to New Yorkers (Especially on Walk to Work Day)

Celeste Pandhi April 6, 2025

Did you know the first Friday of April is Walk to Work Day?

I am a little late with this post, but it's still important! Walk to Work Day is a national reminder that something as simple as walking can have a profound impact on your health, mindset, and even your real estate decisions—especially here in New York City, where walking is woven into the culture.

In NYC, walking isn’t just a way to get from point A to point B—it’s a lifestyle, a mindset, and for many, a daily ritual. On Walk to Work Day, we celebrate how powerful a brisk city walk can be—and why so many New Yorkers consider walkability a top priority when choosing where to live.

1. It’s Built into the Culture

In New York, walking is second nature. It’s how we clear our heads, catch up on podcasts, grab groceries, or just people-watch. For many, the walk to work is sacred—a moment of transition that sets the tone for the day ahead.

2. It’s Great for Your Health

Walking is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to improve your physical and mental well-being. From better heart health to increased focus and reduced stress, a walkable commute is a built-in wellness practice—no gym required. (But hitting some weights never hurts as an additional on especially for us women 40+)

3. It Shapes Real Estate Choices

When clients are searching for a home, walkability often ranks just as high as square footage or natural light. Neighborhoods draw residents who want to walk not just to work, but to their favorite cafés, markets, and parks.

4. It Saves Time, Money & Stress

Avoiding the unpredictability of traffic or crowded subway transfers is a major perk of walkable living. A shorter commute translates to more time for yourself, and fewer transportation costs over time.

5. It’s a Lifestyle Choice

There’s something grounding about stepping into the rhythm of the city every morning. Whether you're strolling through a tree-lined block or bustling avenue, walking connects you to your neighborhood, your thoughts, and your goals.

Looking for a More Walkable Lifestyle?

On Walk to Work Day—and every day—consider how your home supports your health, your time, and your peace of mind.
