World Health Day: A Healthier You Starts at Home

Celeste Pandhi April 7, 2025

Today is World Health Day!

Observed every year on April 7th, this important day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Each year, World Health Day spotlights a specific global health concern—everything from mental health and maternal care to climate change and access to healthcare—with the goal of encouraging awareness, education, and action worldwide.

While the WHO often focuses on large-scale public health systems, we believe that true health begins at home. Especially in a city like New York, where fast-paced lifestyles and small spaces can easily throw off your balance, your environment plays a critical role in how you feel—physically and mentally.

Your space is your foundation. And it should support your well-being, not drain it.

Here are 5 practical ways to build a healthier home in NYC:

1. Soak in that natural light:

Sunlight helps regulate sleep, boosts your mood, and energizes your space. Look for apartments with large windows — and keep window coverings minimal during the day. Personally, I don't care about a bedroom with a view or large windows, it's the living space that is important to me.

2. Add calming plants:

Even a few houseplants can improve air quality, reduce stress, and connect you to nature. Start simple with snake plants, pothos, or peace lilies. If your not a plant person like me, the Orchid is personally my favorite.  I can't seem to kill them.

3. Cut down on clutter:

NYC living often means tight quarters. A clutter-free environment can lower stress and help you focus. Consider vertical storage, multi-use furniture, or regular donation sweeps.

A cluttered space for me equals a cluttered mind.

4. Create one screen-free chill zone:

Even a small nook with a book, a candle, and a cozy chair can give your brain a break from digital noise. Boundaries between rest and screen time matter more than ever. This is a struggle in my house. There is a couch in my kids playroom that becomes my sanctuary after hours.

5. Live near what moves you — parks, markets, or movement:

Walkability is wellness. Proximity to green spaces, fresh produce, or fitness studios can dramatically impact your routine and quality of life. Fortunately in NYC we have access to everything very close by.

Your home isn’t just where you live—it’s where your wellness begins.

This World Health Day, we encourage you to reflect: Is your home helping or hindering your health? If it's time for a change, we’d love to help you find a space that supports your best life.
