The famous Upper West Side (UWS) spans from West 59th to West 110th Streets, bordered by the Hudson River (and Riverside Park) to the west and Central Park to the east. The first subway line went through the UWS, establishing early on that the neighborhood was the place to be. Now there are new developments and shopping areas near 97th Street and Columbus Avenue. Columbia University is at the north end of the neighborhood. Farther south are the American Museum of Natural History, the Beacon Theatre, Lincoln Center, and Columbus Circle.
